What is a Camshaft?

Think of the camshaft as the conductor of your engine’s orchestra. It times the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, making sure everything runs in harmony. As it spins, the camshaft’s lobes push against the valves, ensuring the right mix of air and fuel enters the combustion chamber, and exhaust gasses exit smoothly.

A camshaft is a vital part of internal combustion engines, sitting in the engine block or the cylinder head. It plays a crucial role in controlling the timing of the intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft rotates, driven by the timing belt, and its cam lobes push against the valves to open them at the right moments. This action allows the air-fuel mixture to enter the combustion chamber and the exhaust gasses to exit.

In a typical engine, the camshaft will control each intake and exhaust valve, and in DOHC engines, you’ll find two camshafts per cylinder bank. Each camshaft in these engines operates two intake valves and two exhaust valves per cylinder. This setup allows for better airflow and improved engine performance. The camshaft’s design, including the shape and lift of the cam lobes, determines the valve lift, which is how far the valves open.

When the intake valves open, the air-fuel mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber. After combustion, the exhaust valves open to allow the burnt gasses to escape. The precise timing of these actions is critical for optimal engine performance, and it’s all managed by the camshaft.

The camshaft handles the precise timing of your engine’s intake and exhaust valves, which is key to keeping any internal combustion engine running efficiently. By opening and closing these valves at just the right moments, the camshaft helps your engine breathe better, leading to more power and better fuel efficiency. This fine-tuned timing means your fuel burns more completely, giving you more bang for your buck and cutting down on emissions.
